Winter Course Operational Adjustments

6 October 2025

Dear Members,

As we look ahead to the winter season, we want to share with you some operational adjustments that will help us deliver on our shared vision: presenting The Wisley’s courses in the best possible condition during the main golf season, whilst still providing enjoyable, competitive and accessible winter golf.

Winter Play Management (2025/26)

The continued growth in rounds is a positive reflection of our members’ enthusiasm for golf. However, with rounds forecast to reach approximately 31,000 this year – more than 25% above pre-Covid levels and 10% higher than the three-year average – it is essential that we take steps to better protect turf health during the low-growth months (November–February).

It is also worth noting that many other leading private clubs operate with significantly lower annual rounds, particularly in winter, operate with extended seasonal closures or walking-only policies. The Wisley has a higher demand from our members and we must manage this accordingly, but the benchmarking provides useful context as we continue to strive for the highest possible course conditioning standards.

To balance play with preservation, the following measures will apply this winter:

    1. Rotating 9-hole loop closure (December–February) to spread impact evenly.
    2. Revised tee sheet:
      – Mon–Thu & Sun: single start, 12-minute intervals.
      – Fri–Sat: two-tee start, 12-minute intervals.
    3. Competition adjustments: Midweek Medal paused Dec–Feb; revised SFA format.
    4. Adjusted first tee time: Delayed winter start time
    5. Member guidance: encouragement of carry/pencil bags where possible to reduce wear.
    6. Weather policy: a firmer and more consistent approach to closures in adverse conditions, with full details to be confirmed and shared in due course.
    7. Booking window: the 30-day booking window will apply from the 31st October, returning to 90 days from 1 January 2026.

Why This Matters

    1. These steps will help safeguard turf health during the most vulnerable period.
    2. They ensure we continue to offer accessible winter golf and a competitive calendar.
    3. By reducing traffic and winter damage, our team will be able to dedicate more time to preparing the courses for the season ahead, rather than spending that time on repairs.
    4. Without these measures, the combination of a challenging winter followed by a poor spring could result in longer recovery times, higher maintenance costs, and greater disruption for members at the very start of the main playing season.
    5. Most importantly, they will allow us to present the courses in the best condition possible during the main season, avoiding significant recovery from winter damage – a standard central to The Wisley’s vision to be the best conditioned member-owned club in the UK.

We will monitor the impact of these changes carefully and share updates as the season progresses. Your continued engagement and feedback remain invaluable as we balance immediate enjoyment with long-term excellence.
