Vice-Captaincy Announcement

3 September 2026

Dear Members,

Following the recent nomination process and the recommendation of the Nominations Committee (NomCo), the Board is pleased to announce that Andrew Bacon has been appointed Vice-Captain for the 2026/27 season, an appointment he has kindly accepted.

Andrew will formally take up his Vice-Captain duties at the End of Season Party on Saturday, 17th October.

The Board and NomCo welcome Andrew to the role and look forward to seeing him work alongside Jack over the coming year. The management team will, of course, be on hand to support them both as they look to make the 2026/27 season another memorable one for the Club.

Please join us in congratulating Andrew and wishing him every success in his new role. We also invite you to take a moment to read Andrew’s message below.

Kind regards,

“I can’t remember the first time I played at The Wisley, but it was a long time ago, during a time when Simon Lough, a very good and generous friend who joined in around 1993 and is still a member now, would bring me as a guest every so often, before I was really a regular golfer.

Then in 2016, on another visit, I remember saying “I’d forgotten how great this place is”, he replied “you should join”, and I’ve been a member since 2017.

Actually there’s a bit more to that story, and it’s a short anecdote I like to indulge in occasionally at those times when I meet new people, as we so often do, and we ask each other “how long have you been a member?” Immediate friendly interaction is absolutely typical of The Wisley and is one of the numerous reasons we all love the place. I have always tried to play with new people whenever I can, often in the superbly run competitions, and whenever I do I find that the only drawback is that the constantly expanding group of “people I’d like to arrange a game with” becomes extremely hard to manage!

My wife Kathleen has played at Wisley a few times, but I find it very hard to get in her golf diary as she probably plays more golf than me, and certainly spends more time at her favourite place, the Roehampton Club, than I do at The Wisley, so the news that I would be spending more time here was treated simply with a smile and an enthusiasm for me to take it on and enjoy it.. Our three adult children, while very sporty, have never got the golf bug, but there’s time – Kathleen picked it up after retirement!

I feel very honoured and pleased to have been asked to take on the role first of vice-captain and then captain of the club. For me this is the perfect opportunity to contribute in a practical way to a club that has given me so much pleasure since I joined, and I’ll do my best to make sure that I make a success of it. I wish Jack a successful year as captain next year and look forward to spending more time at the club, meeting more members, enjoying the wonderful hospitality of the staff and supporting Jack in any way I can.“
