Dear Members,

Many of you will have noticed that the lone willow tree on Mill’s fourth hole, situated approximately 80 yards from the green on the right-hand side of the fairway bunkers, has recently been removed.

Last week, during a period of high winds, one of the tree’s three main stems failed unexpectedly. Although the willow appeared healthy from the outside, further inspection revealed extensive internal decay at the base and throughout all three stems, which shared a common trunk. Unfortunately, the tree had become structurally unsound and presented a significant safety risk.

While we appreciate that this was a familiar feature of the hole, the extent of the decay meant there was no safe alternative to removing the tree in its entirety. The safety of our members, their guests, and club staff must always come first.

We know many members will be sorry to see it go, and we share that disappointment. However, this decision was made only after assessing the condition of the tree and considering the risks it posed.
