Concorde Trophy
Friday 18th October
The Concorde Knockout concluded on Friday, 18th October, with a match marked by resilience and close competition between Peter Conroy &Peter Harrison vs Greg & Craig Horsford. Peter Harrison, unfortunately battling illness all week, was uncertain if he could even play right up until the match.
Early on, Greg set the tone, sinking a tricky downhill 10-foot putt on the first hole of The Garden to save a half. This early momentum seemed to favour Greg and Craig, as several holes came down to close putts, which fortunately went their way.
The brothers scored an impressive 21 points in better ball through the front nine, establishing a 6-up lead at the turn. Though the back nine saw some back-and-forth scoring, Greg and Craig held strong, ultimately finishing with a 5&4 victory.
It was a well-fought final and an exciting finish to the 2024 knockouts!
Arlington Cup
Thursday 10th October
The final of the Arlington Singles Knockout, played on Thursday, October 10th, saw a thrilling duel between Michael Chard and Peter Gray. Both players delivered an outstanding performance, with great putts holed and impressive up-and-downs throughout the match.
Michael took the lead, going two up with two holes to play, following a superb approach on Garden 6 that he converted for birdie. However, a bogey on Garden 8 reduced his lead to just one up going into the final hole. Peter rose to the challenge, hitting his approach shot close on the last hole to bring the match to all square.
The match went to a playoff on Mill 1, where Peter made a solid par to secure the win and claim the Arlington Cup. It was a closely contested match, with both players showcasing exceptional skill and sportsmanship to get to the final.
Following the conclusion of this knockout the Rank List has seen some changes. Michael Chard takes the lead, having previously been in sixth place. Peter Gray jumps from eighteenth to second, 13.38 points behind Michael. Peter Harrison drops down into third place 68.9 points behind Michael. It’s worth noting that Peter Harrison is in the Concorde final alongside his playing partner Peter Conroy and they will add another 350 or 275 points to their standings upon the conclusion of the match on the 18th of October.
There’s more points up for grabs for the remaining players with the upcoming McKenzie Cup, October Midweek Medal and the October Monthly Medal where the Rank List winner will be crowned at the End of Season Dinner.
Senior Singles Knockout
Thursday 3rd October
The Senior Singles Final, played over The Garden & The Church between Peter Gray and Helen Heasman, it was a closely contested match, filled with many notable moments.
Peter started strong, going 2 up at the turn, thanks to birdies on Garden 1 and Garden 6, but Helen showed her resilience, making key pars on holes 3, 4, 6, and 8 to keep the pressure on.
The match remained tightly contested as they halved Church 1-4, but Peter gained control by winning Church 5 and Church 6 with solid pars, ultimately securing the victory.
Peter came against five ladies in his six rounds this year, demonstrating his consistency throughout the tournament. As for Helen, she has proven to be a formidable competitor, reaching the final for the second year in a row, having beaten Peter in the 2023 semi-final.
In the end, Peter Gray emerged victorious, adding another chapter to this exciting rivalry.
Senior Fourball Knockout
Thursday 12th September
Paul Weston and Mike Christieson secured victory in the Senior Fourball Knockout, winning their match 4&3 against their opponents, Paul Copson and Rob Portwood. While they may not recall many specifics from the round, they do remember being steady throughout the match. Despite losing the first hole, they quickly turned things around and stayed ahead for the rest of the match.
The pair complemented each other perfectly, with Mike in excellent form on the longer holes and Paul bringing a consistent short game when needed. This win marks their third victory in this competition over the last five tournaments, a testament to their strong teamwork!
Super Seniors
Saturday 28th September
Carol James emerged victorious in the Super Seniors Knockout, defeating Alistair Lines 4&3 in a hard-fought match.
For Carol, the round felt like a blur as she stayed focused on every shot. Despite some struggles with the bunkers, she managed to save two key bunker shots at crucial moments in the match, keeping her momentum going.
Alistair proved to be a great opponent, making it a memorable and enjoyable match. Carol credited her strong putting, improved thanks to a recent lesson with Wisley PGA Professional Chris Capitanucci, which helped her seal the win.
Ladies Vase Knockout
Friday 27th September
Cindy Dawes claimed victory in the Ladies Vase Knockout against Callie Botsford in a match played under truly appalling weather conditions. Both players faced relentless rain, leaving them drenched, but the competition remained fierce throughout.
Callie took an early lead, going two up by the 8th hole on The Garden, but Cindy managed to pull one back, and from there, the momentum shifted in her favour. Cindy made the most of the stroke holes and managed to win the match 4 up. Reflecting on the day, she modestly admitted, “I got lucky,” but it was her persistence that ultimately secured the win.
Val’s Vase Pairs Knockout
Thursday 3rd October
The final of the Val’s Vase Pairs Knockout was a thrilling contest between Masumi Dobson and Toshiko Koyama-Hall, and their opponents Bohye Kim and Jungwook Seo. Played over The Garden & The Church, the match was tightly contested from start to finish.
Masumi and Toshiko dominated the front nine on The Garden, finishing 1 up as they headed to The Church. The back nine, however, was a different story, with both teams battling intensely and finding themselves all square by the 16th hole.
On Church 8 and 9, Bohye Kim stepped up under pressure, sinking clutch putts of 4 and 7 feet, securing a narrow 1 up victory for her and Jungwook Seo. The match was a testament to both teams’ skills, with Bohye and Jungwook emerging as the Val’s Vase Pairs Knockout champions in an incredibly close final.
